He's occasionally maligned, but against Honduras Karim Benzema seemed to excel in the role of France's most important player. Franck Ribery wasn't missed...

@scrumpylungs I'd say France's second goal was simply the result of some fabulous Henry-like tekkers mate. and that emilio izaguirre has the makings of a WWE "superstar". tbf the whole honduras team might really freshen up the franchise.

@scrumpylungs - a top class striker like Giroud? Who has built a reputation of turning sitters into goal kicks?

I must have been watching a different Benzema in this match. The one thing I'll agree with is that he was intent to get involved in all of France's moves and had a lot of attempts and touches on the ball, but for the most part I thought he was wasteful incredibly uncreative and often ended up turning what looked like promising French moves in to Honduras goal kicks. In terms of breaking down the Hoduras defense, Benzema was completely ineffectual until Honduras got a man sent off, and even then wasn't that dangerous. His first goal was a penalty, and France's second goal was simply the fortunate result of some very poor goalkeeping after Benzema missed a one on one opportunity. I can't criticise him for France's third goal, so he did achieve one thing today, but I don't see it as worthy of some of the praise it was getting. Sure the piledriver into the top of the net looked very nice, but considering how much space he was in and the fact that the goalkeeper was completely off balance and on the other side of the goal when he got the ball at his feet; it would have taken a pretty poor effort for a top class striker not to have turned it into a goal.
