The advantage of having a team without superstars is that you don't feel the need to shoehorn players into roles that don't fit them. It allows tactics and strategy to dominate over cramming as many big names as possible. I won't elaborate on how England are an example of this because plenty has been said already but even F365's world cup ladder is indicative of how we as a country value the individual over the team.

Costa Rica can now rest players against England which will probably deny the netral viewer the specticle of seeing Campbell put the fear of God into the english defense

Hopefully all the Rooney apologists will now consider the idea that setting out to maximise a team beats setting out to maximise a single player. Before the match I thought England could still scrape through, but my word Italy were poor. Costa Rica harried and hassled and with Pirlo having a bad day and the Italians competing amongst themselves for Brazil 2014 Most Offside Player.. well, it just seemed to be fated that Italy would lose and we would go home. Now I just hope Uruguay go out too.

What if y'know Costa Rica are actually better footballers than England are? This oh didn't they do so well and work so hard for each other is a bit demeaning.

I don't think that there is any real doubt in saying that, say, Wayne Rooney is better than Joel Campbell, or Gary Cahill is better than Giancarlo Gonzalez. It's about the team rather than individuals, is I think the point. They played as a better team.

t's just a ride. Bill Hicks is sorely missed, what a prophet and still relevant twenty years after his death. I'm glad though he didn't get to see George Bush Jnr as President.
