A home tie against Everton in the third round is at stake for the eventual winner after Blue Square Bet Premier side Hereford held League Two's Cheltenham to a 1-1 draw last week.
"I think we approach it in pretty much the same way," Yates told Cheltenham's official website.
"We have to make sure we're solid, we have to make sure we try and play the way we want to play with a bit of tempo, but sides don't always let you.
"I listened to the commentary from their game against Barrow (where Hereford won 2-0 on Friday). They're a good side and they've got some powerful players.
"They gave one or two (players) a breather on Friday by the looks of it. I expect to be confronted by pretty much the same team that started against us.
"We know what they're about, we just need to make sure that we play for the 90 minutes like we did for the first 15 against them last week.
"There's no way we're going to take them anything other than majorly seriously. They're a good side with good players and we have to be on top of our game."
Hereford manager Martin Foyle will no doubt be boosted by the Barrow win, a result which means the Bulls have only lost once in their last 11 games.
However, despite the run of good form, Foyle is refusing to put too much pressure on his side even though a win would create a huge cash windfall for the club.
"We know the tickets have gone very well and we're looking forward to a good crowd," Foyle told BBC Hereford & Worcester.
"It's not the end of the world if we get knocked out but, financially, we know it's sat there for us and it's the future of the club."
Elsewhere, Blue Square Bet Premier rivals Barrow and Macclesfield will attempt to book their place in the next round and a tie against npower Championship side Cardiff.
The sides meet in a rearranged second-round tie after the original fixture was called off on December 1 due to a frozen pitch.
Barrow assistant manager Ashley Hoskin will be hoping for a break from his league worries after the defeat by Hereford saw his side slip to the bottom of the table.
First-choice goalkeeper Danny Hurst also dislocated his finger during the match and will miss tonight's cup tie while midfielder Garry Hunter is suspended.
In the other games, Notts County face Rotherham with an away tie against Aldershot up for grabs while Southend take on Bury to earn a third-round match against Brentford.
Brentford had been due to replay their match against Bradford until the Bantams were booted out of the competition by the Football Association for fielding an ineligible player in their second round tie last Friday.
Bradford did not receive written permission for Curtis Good, on loan from Newcastle, to play in the competition by the 12pm deadline on the day of the fixture, which ended 1-1 at Valley Parade.
