I'm confused.. Mediawatch regularly toasts the papers for misinterpreting/sensationalizing a manager/player/owner's words. And now we have this article saying we shouldn't take SAF's words for granted. Which is it - do we trust managers or the media or neither? I would go with option 3 to be honest (but would you trust me on that statement?). Everyone has their agenda - SAF to win titles, journalists to sell papers/subscriptions and get as many followers as they can so they can sell ad space. Will Rooney be at OT next season? who knows!? so much can happen in 6 months. What SAF needs right now is for him to focus on getting that double for United. That's probably why he is saying what he did, as you point out. Also, you view SAF's ban as punishment for accurately reporting on injuries - I view it as a ban for leaking news that SAF did not want released. As you rightly imply his first goal (no pun intended) is to win as many games and trophies for Man Utd as possible. What fans/the media know and when they know is secondary. And rightly so. Punters may have a different opinion but that's a different issue..

ruel_fox came closest. United have 2 options as they will not let contract run down. Expect him to be sold this summer.

I was never convinced that City ever tried to tempt Rooney across from Salford, why this supposed "approach" is always mentioned but never confirmed just proves the press make stuff up to suit their own agenda. Rooney won't go anywhere in the summer except for on his holidays.

"...doesn't mean the speculation has been pointless". Yes, it does. It is pointless, it's not going to achieve any change in Sir Alex's thinking, though it may possibly make Rooney sick and tired of dealing with the English media. So maybe, if the point was to drive one of our best players overseas, it will have delivered on it's point.

Fergie has banned reporters for correctly reporting an injury story and for writing a book he hadn't read, so perhaps don't be quite so sure about that.
