Dev - that's exactly my point. It's how 'overachievement' is defined, or not as is usually the case. If it's stated that it's overachievement based on finances than then it's absolutely right, but by not by not qualifying 'overachievement' it becomes ambiguous - is it overachieving based on money, history, size of stadium, kit design, mascot costume? You'll not find any Evertonian who doesn't think the club's performing above its financial position. Most Evertonians are also sensible to realise the club (and football) is not what it was, and it's not the powerhouse it used to be. But the ambiguous journalistic use of 'overachievement' more often paints the club as a parochial outfit with a couple of fans that once did something back in the 1800's...

Nobody says Arsenal are overachieving yet they spend less than Everton.

"The club IS overachieving if you compare budgets and salaries with the rest of the league - but it's certainly not overachieving for a club of its size and history" What? Seriously? what does history have to do with anything. they routinely finish higher than other clubs that spend more money. ergo overacheiving!

I'm stunned, amazed and unfathomably mystified at this piece (ahem). Why has no-one spoken about the Bale Bulge in the accompanying pic?! Protrudes more than his pecs. That's one from Miller's picture library without doubt.

Hazard is Chelsea's most important player for run-in. Mata has been fantastic and consistently good while Chelsea's form has been spotty. If Mata is consistently excellent as usual and Hazard plays well Chelsea can finish 2nd and win a cup. Glad article didn't mention Wilshere, posters have, because he is not ghat important to Arsenal. Great player but he doesn't do anything Osman hasn't been doing for years, rare goals, rare assts, great ball movement and control.

Surprised Andreas Weimann didn't make this list. Along with Benteke, Villa's survival is dependent on his form.

This continual branding of Everton as 'overachieving' is frustrating. The club IS overachieving if you compare budgets and salaries with the rest of the league - but it's certainly not overachieving for a club of its size and history. However, the way it's always written in the press is that it's plucky little Everton up there with the big boys. Everton have won more league titles than Chelsea, Man City and Spurs combined, and been to the FA Cup final more times than 'cup specialist' Tottenham too. If it's written than they're overachieving given the club's budget, then it's correct. But then when does the overachievement become the norm? In the last ten seasons they've finished 7th, 7th, 8th, 5th, 5th, 6th, 11th, 4th, 17th, 7th. So aren't the 11th and 17th the anomalies? As it's been correctly said on this site before, it's not that they're not a big club (they absolutely are) - it's that these days big actually means 'fashionable'. Sadly for Everton, this isn't the case...

Jon Stead has played for eight clubs in 10 years. If a Premier League player played for that many clubs in that timescale he'd be a "jouneyman" or a "mercenary". Not in the football league though, oh no: These are the leagues with "real football, real fans", after all.

m absolutely disgusted that I've been misquoted in saying that if a chance came up to join Arsenal I would be interested. What I meant to say is if Man United or Chelsea were interested......
