The World Cup Veterans XI

There's been plenty of talk about the bright young things at this World Cup(Paul Pogba, Raheem Sterling etc) but what about the veterans? This XI is all 34-plus...

Mondragon is a great name really; sounds like (and reminds me of) Pendragon (of Merlin) to me. The 2014 FIFA World Cup is here at last! Bring it on!!

It strikes me that you could have had a midfield of Gerrard, Pirlo, Lampard and Xavi. But you don't.

magico gonzalez, Buffon didn't play in '98. Your point still stands that it's an amazing achievement all the same. On a different note, I was oh so pleasantly surprised to find an F365 article mentioning Pirlo without gushing about his looks/beard. A big well done to Adam Bate for not resorting to the en vogue pseudo-bisexuality.

Must be my "unique" brain but any time I see Klose's name I just think of C3PO yelling "Klose?!" as the Han decides he's going closer to "one of the big ones"

@stevenjameshyde - I think you're spot on - didn't Forlan win the Golden Ball as player of the tournament?

I suspect you'll get a lot of these, but Thomas Muller won the Golden Boot four years ago. Forlan was joint top scorer (along with David Villa and Wesley Sneijder), but Muller won on assists

No matter what is their club form but Klose and Podolski always get picked up for national team and always deliver..

Great article and great keeper. Worth noting however that a certain Gigi Buffon is about to play his 5th World Cup

ven if United were to sign CR7 & Messi to play upfront, the fact remains Fletcher and Cleverly are playing in midfield. That's where the problem is. Fletcher is too slow with an awful pass, while Cleverly is simply rubbish

rop Rooney (he's so disappointing, overrated and overpaid), and play Di Maria and RVP upfront, much like the set up at the Netherlands team with Roben and RVP...
