Nzonzi was somewhat fortunate to escape a red card after appearing to slap Ruiz in the face in the first half with referee Lee Probert only booking the Frenchman.

Jol was unhappy that Nzonzi was not punished for the incident, feeling he was lucky to stay on the pitch.

"I think he's very lucky to get a yellow card," Jol told Sky Sports HD2.

"This was a sort of knockout punch that was more than red. It was evil."

Jol was delighted with his side's win as they boosted their survival hopes with a much-needed three points to move further clear of trouble at the wrong end of the table.

"For us, today was vital," added Jol. "You know you can get dragged into problems but now we have 32 points we can look forward to the next couple of games."

Jol also singled out match-winner Dimitar Berbatov and Mark Schwarzer for special praise after the Fulham keeper saved a second-half penalty from Jon Walters to ensure Berbatov's first-half goal earned the home side the victory.

"I feel you always need special, professional players who can make a difference and today it was Dimitar," continued Jol.

"We were the better team in the first half but we needed Mark Schwarzer to get us the clean sheet and the three points."
