Dale Carrick's close-range finish and substitute Billy King's late strike earned Hearts only their sixth win of the season - and earned them a temporary stay of execution.

The Gorgie club's impending demotion would have been confirmed had they lost to their arch rivals - and Locke was delighted to deny them that satisfaction.

"That was a result for our supporters. They've stuck by us all season," he said.

"It was a massive game. One thing we didn't want is for Hibs to come here and be the team that put us down.

"The fans have had to put up with a lot this season. Hopefully they are happy tonight. Unfortunately, probably, it is a bit too late for us.

"Our wide men caused them a lot of problems. I thought it was a great game. We got a lucky break with the disallowed goal because their boy was onside. The players have showed they are improving and hopefully we have a strong future.

"I thought everyone was great, even the subs. It would be wrong of me to single any one out."

With the score at 1-0, Jordon Forster had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside on a frustrating day for Hibs and manager Terry Butcher - whose side have claimed just one win in 13 - was not impressed.

"It's a horrendous call by the linesman. That goal would have lifted us," he said. "For it to be chalked off is hard to take.

"We've done well in possession but too little shots, too little crosses into the box. We had reasonable scrappy opportunities but no real clear-cut ones.

"Once again we haven't scored and once again we haven't tested Jamie MacDonald. We've lost the game and it's hard to take.

"We've left them in no uncertain terms that we need to get going now. We have six games left and we have to get points. Every club in the second half is in a dog fight. We need to pull our fingers out and work harder.

"We have gone from being a really difficult team to play against, a team that scores from set plays and grinds out wins, to a team that doesn't score and concedes goals."

was there, it was embarrassing - the team looked totally unbalanced from the off, the defence was woeful and when Mikel came off injured it got even worse with nobody in front of them. Up front on several occasions we had opportunities and nobody would shoot - it was a complete farse! On the back of Salah's performance I'm glad there is talk of getting shot...

reat to see Tommy Rosicky getting some love. A wonderful player. Such a pity we lost so long to injury. I was so excited when we signed him, this resurgence only makes the absences seem more of a lost opportunity.
