Bruce: Refs must face cameras

Hull City manager Steve Bruce believes Premier League referees should be asked to face the cameras after matches following a controversial penalty decision in their 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Tuesday.

Jason Puncheon scored the lone goal of the night as the Eagles drew level on points with Hull, who suffered a fourth successive top-flight defeat.

Just 90 seconds before Puncheon's match-winning goal, Shane Long went down in the Palace penalty area after a collision with Danny Gabbidon, which Bruce believes warranted a "stonewall" spot kick.

Another incident saw new-signing Nikica Jelavic brought down on the edge of the box and again Bruce was infuriated at the referee's decision to play on.

"We are hugely disappointed," Bruce told Sky Sports. "I got fined two weeks ago for comments made against referees and I don't want to again.

"But for me, there are two stonewall penalties in the first half and then to send the goalkeeper off in the last five minutes, it was innocuous.

"It summed up our night really, it was never going to be. We've played well and unfortunately we haven't got anything out of the game."

Bruce was fined heavily in November followed comments made in the aftermath of Hull's defeat to Tottenham, but the manager believes referees should front up to the media too.

Fines

"I go away, pay fines and pay fines and no doubt I'll end up in trouble again but it's only the truth," he claimed.

"There are three horrible decisions which have gone against us and that ultimately cost us the game.

"I think the referees have to sometimes come out on the cameras and we must question, should they be refereeing the games."

Roger East's decision to deny Long a penalty and wave play on particularly annoyed the Hull City boss, a call which Bruce believes changed the complexion of the game.

"They go straight up the other end of the pitch and score; even then they have a bit of fortune," he said.

"The referee has to give them in my opinion.

"They are paid handsomely to make big decisions and big calls and unfortunately he hasn't done that today.

"If they aren't penalties at this level, then I really don't know what is. They are big games and big points to play for and big decisions like that make a hell of a difference."

Innocuous

Bruce's fury heightened in the closing stages when his goalkeeper Allan McGregor was shown a red card for violent conduct, another judgment which left the Tigers boss baffled.

"To send the goalkeeper off is another one where we're scratching our heads, thinking if that's not innocuous I don't know what is," he added.

"I think you just have to show the pictures, it is a horrible challenge on him and yes he's reacted, but he hasn't reacted in a way to say it's a red card.

"He hasn't turned round and whacked him or kicked him. The decisions in big occasions have gone against us again and again."

Despite being visibly enraged by the outcome, Bruce hailed the persistence of his side, as they enjoyed the majority of possession and created 13 chances on goal.

"I couldn't fault them," he said. "To come away from home and dominate the way we did, I thought we deserved to go away with something.

"The way they have played it won't be hard to pick them up; I couldn't fault them to a man.

"They did everything they possibly could. We have to take the opportunities we get though."
