The former England international turned down an offer that would have made him the South Yorkshire club's highest-paid manager ever, instead opting to continue the project that has seen him lead Inverness to second place in the SPL.

With Andrew Shinnie and Aaron Doran still to sign new contracts and top scorer Billy McKay reportedly wanted by Championship teams, Butcher now wants his players to follow his lead.

He said: "I don't know if me staying might give them a stimulus to sign up, but hopefully they will take it as another positive.

"I've always been serious about the club but even more so by turning down that great offer. We have to get back speaking to people now to see what they are going to do, but we want it to continue."

Butcher revealed he would have received a massive pay rise had he agreed to join Championship strugglers Barnsley, but decided against the move due to the satisfaction he is getting out of managing in Scotland.

"When I showed the chairman the deal Barnsley offered he fell off his chair," he added. "I think I made him choke a bit. They offered me more - a lot more and then some more again.

"I'd have been the highest-paid Barnsley manager ever. That's how much they wanted me to come in to try to save them and build for the future.

"But it has never been about money for me. It's been about pride and enjoying my football. It's about making any club I'm at better and we're doing that here.

"To be fair, the chairman has been brilliant. To allow me to do that was great. I'd never use Barnsley or any other club to gain a better contract here."
