The defender, 20, was due to see his current deal expire at the end of this season but he has now signed an extended deal to add on a further 12 months.

It comes as reward for the promise he has shown boss Mick McCarthy since arriving from non-league Chippenham last December.

Mings told the club's official website: "I was delighted to sign my first contract here but to know the manager has shown confidence in me and wants me to stay is a big bonus.

"It gives me some stability, knowing my future is sorted for the next few years, but I can't rest on my laurels.

"The manager has told me to carry on doing what I'm doing and it's down to me to get into the first team and look to play as many games as possible and at some stage in the future, win another deal to stay here."

Mings hopes to return to training during the forthcoming international break having missed the start of the season with a knee injury.

ah, Fergie is just having another pop at Rooney. He just wants to put him down whenever he gets a chance. Rooney is by far the best English player. Carrick is not far behind, mind. However, by elevating Carrick like that, Sir is having a dig at Wayne. Fergie is well-known for mind games like that. Good to see he's still feisty.
