The title and relegation battles may be settled, but it is all still to play for in the fight to secure a top-four finish. Arsenal are favourites to record a victory at Newcastle which will see them secure Champions League football next season, while Tottenham are odds-on to keep up the pressure by beating Sunderland.

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.
afa has to be favourite for the Everton job now, surely :) He'll realise his ambition to live and work on Merseyside again, get the best out of whoever plays for them, maybe win some cups and be thoroughly loathed by the toffee fans. What's not to like? Go ead, Ken, gimajob!
hat is arguably the least inspiring England I have ever seen. There is not a single name in that list that makes me think I might actually want to watch this team. Not a one.

@TheGuru, I think the media frenzy isn't so much about the challenge itself, but that a) it went completely unpunished at the time, and b) it will stay completely unpunished because of ludicrous red tap put in place by the powers that be.

@Bigal147 I agree. The point i'm making is Newcastle fans seem to forget that they've made bad challenges too. You wouldn't expect of them teams to sue Newcastle would you? The whole issue has been blown way way out of proportion. It was a bad tackle. End of story. Bad challenges happen. Newcastle do them, Sunderland do them, Wigan do them. Just move on. The media frenzy has been ridiculous.

Aye, things were grand back in the day. When men were men and women wore girdles. Not like today, blooming pansies the lot of them!!!

entirely agree with @werwolves. Utter garbage article, presumably to drum up comments. Don't get your panties in a wad? This tackle didn't happen because it's a physical game, but because McManaman was at the very least careless. Bit like driving without due care and attention. Accidents aren't part and parcel of driving, they are an unfortunate side effect from having idiots on the road not paying appropriate attention. It's a shame for McManaman to be singled out, but he should have been banned for 6 games. This kind of thing needs to be drummed out of the game, not defended with the weak line of "it's a physical game, it's a man's game.". It's not about a moral overreaction - sure, the papers always do that. But to go the other way, as you've done here John, is no less shameful.

and not for the first time is it werwolf ? harry boulton you know who tought that kid to tackle like that....your very own football culture as a nation....look at john nicolson...for him its ok to behave like a criminal on the pitch because its "football"? ... others approach the sport as a science and thanks to john we all now realise why england only won it once with a controversial momment..... i blame the foreigners....

What I find strange is the fact that these articles are written by a vegetarian pacifist who abhors violence. What's his next article going to be about? The reintroduction of bull fighting in Barcelona?

@Hulmaldo, I don't think it's unreasonable to get upset by such tackles. I do think that injury is an inevitable consequence of playing sport though. I also think that it's about time that clubs and coaches started taking respsonsibility and that players beun to learn how to tackle. The sanitisation of the game has resulted in the quality of tackling deteriorating too far. You end up with tackles such as this. Who taught this kid to tackle like that?

I think Jon should give up writing these articles. Not because I don't think the articles are good, but simply because the bulk of people who comment on here don't even bother to read the articles properly before wading in to criticise them. He seeks to get a reaction, but the idea is to spark debate, not personal attacks. Any body who bothers to ead this article properly can see that it is a comment on the media reaction and not the incident itself.
