Bernd Schuster: Replaces Manuel Pellegrini at Malaga

Malaga have appointed former West Germany and Barcelona midfielder Bernd Schuster as their new coach on a five-year deal, the La Liga club have confirmed.

Schuster replaces Manuel Pellegrini who left at the end of last season and is expected to be confirmed as the new manager at English Premier League side Manchester City.

Schuster started his coaching career in Germany and has since managed in Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk before spells at Levante, Getafe and Real Madrid - who he guided to the 2008 La Liga title - before moving to Turkey and a one-year spell at Besiktas.

Schuster will be presented to the press next week and Malaga said on their official website: "The Andalusian club trusts the German coach to develop a sound long-term project, so they have agreed a deal for the next five seasons."

They also revealed he will be joined on the coaching staff by former Spanish player Fabio Celestini.

The announcement represents a welcome piece of good news for Malaga following Pellegrini's departure as well as their unsuccessful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against a ban preventing them from playing in European competition next season.

UEFA ruled in December that Malaga would be ineligible to play in Europe for two years, later reduced to one, for violations of financial fair play rules.

Malaga appealed to CAS but UEFA's ruling was ratified.

As well as managerial success with Real and Getafe, Schuster enjoyed a fruitful playing career.

The 53-year-old won the Primera Division with both Barcelona and Real as well as finishing runner-up with Atletico.

He was on the losing side as Barcelona were beaten by Steaua Bucharest in the European Cup final in 1986 although he had been part of the team that had won the European Cup Winners' Cup four years earlier.

Schuster was also in the West Germany side that won the European Championships in 1980.

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
