Villarreal have agreed a deal to sign former Spain Under-21 goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid with an option to make the move permanent.

Atletico won the race to sign the highly-rated Asenjo from Real Valladolid in 2009 but he has found opportunities limited at the Vicente Calderon, where David de Gea and Thibaut Courtois have been first-choice goalkeepers during his time at the club.

The 24-year-old, who suffered a serious knee injury while at Atletico, spent the 2010/11 season on loan at Malaga and he is now heading to El Madrigal for a similar stint with promoted Villarreal.

A statement on www.villarrealcf.es read: "Villarreal, subject to the signing of the contract, have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid for goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo, who will play on loan for the 2013/14 season at the Yellow Submarine. Also, Villarreal, have the option to buy the goalkeeper at the end of the loan period."

xcellent! Not sure if he is any good as a manager (never thought about it) but the 'headbutt in the technical area' and what he said to Pelligrini were just brilliant, it was as if he was trying to recreate the end of the Alan Partridge Xmas special when Alan punched a man in a wheelchair and verbally abused Tony Heirs.
