AC Milan booked their place in the group stages

A review of Wednesday night's Champions League play-off action, including AC Milan's triumph over Ajax.

Seven-time champions AC Milan overcame PSV Eindhoven to make the Champions League group stage for the 11th time in 12 seasons.

Kevin Price-Boateng netted either side of a Mario Balotelli strike to earn the Italian giants a 3-0 win on the night and 4-1 success on aggregate.

Real Sociedad safely made it through to the group stage for the first time since 2003-04, their only previous appearance.

The Spanish side secured an impressive 2-0 win at Lyon in the first leg and Carlos Vela's brace secured the same result in San Sebastian.

Milan and Sociedad were joined in the draw by Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen.

Having beaten Maribor 3-1 in the first leg, Stanislav Tecl's third-minute goal at the Stadion Ljudski vrt was enough to ease through 4-1 on aggregate.

Zenit St Petersburg beat Champions League debutants Pacos Ferreira 4-2 to secure safe progress.

The Russian side won the first leg 4-1 in Portugal and never looked in any danger, especially after Danny goals either side of half-time.

Aleksandr Bukharov further extended Zenit's lead, before Manuel Jose and Carlao struck either side of an Andrey Arshavin penalty as the tie ended 8-3 on aggregate.

James Forrest's injury-time strike saw Celtic reach the group stages for the second successive season.

The Hoops were trailing 2-0 to Kazakhstan champions Shakhter Karagandy after their play-off first leg, but they treated their fans to a great European night in the east end of Glasgow.

Having been kept at bay by Shakhter goalkeeper Aleksandr Mokin, Kris Commons thundered in a left-footed drive from 25 yards to give the home side the lead on the stroke of half-time.

That deserved breakthrough was the boost the they needed to go and finish the job in the second half, with Georgios Samaras grabbing number two moments after the restart before Forrest struck the decisive blow to make it 3-2 on aggregate.

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

H

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
