Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo hopes to lift the FIFA Ballon d'Or next month as he seeks to continually improve as a player.

The Portugal international has finished runner-up in the last two years to Argentina's Lionel Messi and the pair are again on the short-list, along with Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery.

The 28-year-old has been in blistering form for both club and country this term, scoring 34 goals in just 25 appearances, and he hopes to lift the trophy in Zurich on 13 January.

In comments reported by A Bola, Ronaldo is quoted as saying: "I always like to win, but I know that does not depend on me.

"I do not know if I deserve it this year - I've been on the podium for six years, this is the seventh or eighth year in the FIFPro team.

"This is no accident, it demonstrates the consistency that I have shown in recent years.

"Do I deserve to win? I believe I deserve to win the Golden Ball each year. I would like to win, but sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, that is the way things are."

He added: "I'm an ambitious person, a player who always wants the best. A player who loves to learn, who likes to maintain a high level.

"Obviously, each year I am more mature, I have more experience and that's good for me and for my team or selection.

"I am a privileged person. Year after year, there is always a challenge and different motivations."

He believes record signing Gareth Bale is settling in very well to the demands of La Liga after his protracted transfer from Spurs this summer.

"He has been a useful player, a great player who will help us a lot," said Ronaldo, who denied Real are over-reliant on his goals for the club.

"Madrid does not depend on one player. I help, it's my job, what I have to do, give your best and help the team, so I feel good.

"Real Madrid's team is very good and there are great players."

Real currently sit third in La Liga, five points behind Barcelona and Atletico, but Ronaldo believes they can still claim the silverware.

He added: "Barcelona and Atletico have been more consistent than us. La Liga is long. Obviously we want to be always above the first, but we have to give credit to what Barca and Atletico have done this season, spectacular.

"There is still hope that Madrid, in the end, may be first."

m only commenting on this (I don't care about Liverpool) because F365's twitter said I had call Matt Stanger a tw*t (which I don't agree with anyway) but I just wanted to be the first. Am I the first?

unday, Sunday. Will there be a fan of either team, who if they are winning after 80 mins, won't still be nervous? This could be anything from 0-0 to 5-5, and no one would bat an eye.
