The midfielder is struggling with a knee problem that forced him to miss Barcelona's match with Villarreal at the weekend and he will not be available to national team coach Vicente del Bosque.

Del Bosque has opted against calling up a replacement for the 30-year-old and will stick with the remaining 22 players named in his squad on Friday, the Spanish football federation announced.

The two-time reigning European champions play France in a friendly on Thursday before facing Macedonia in their opening European Qualifier next Monday.
