Preston midfielder Andy Procter has stepped down as club captain despite only assuming the role after joining from Accrington in January.

A club statement read: "Andy Procter, who assisted the club on his arrival by wearing the captain's armband, has, as expected, relinquished this additional responsibility.

"We are extremely grateful to Andy for his having agreed to take on this short term role upon his arrival last season."

The news comes on the day the club announced 14 players are to be released at the end of their contracts, with a further seven placed on the transfer list as manager Graham Westley begins his promised summer overhaul.
