The striker, 30, who counts Stockport, Leeds, Crewe and Hungarian side Ferencvaros among his former clubs, will go straight into Graham Westley's squad for the League One visit of Brentford on Saturday.

Elding's loan from the Blue Square Bet Premier outfit runs up to and including North End's New Year's Day encounter with Hartlepool.

He has been granted permission to feature in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy but is cup tied for the FA Cup second-round tie against Gillingham.
