Benson has spent much of this season on the bench and has joined the South Coast side in a bid for regular first-team football.

The 33-year-old signed joined Town from Charlton Athletic in January and played a significant part in last season's promotion effort.

He has scored three times for Swindon so far this term and could make his debut for Portsmouth in Saturday's game against Doncaster Rovers at Fratton Park.

The initial loan deal will see him remain with the club until 16th December 2012.
