John Hughes: New Hartlepool boss

Scot Hughes, 48, has already made a big impression on League One's bottom club since replacing Neale Cooper, who quit the north-east outfit nearly three weeks ago.

Green said the club had drawn up a shortlist of four for the job, that included former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and ex-Hull boss Phil Brown, before turning to former Falkirk and Hibernian manager Hughes, who quit his latest job with Livingston in a bid for success south of the border.

Green said: "Knowing the Hartlepool community and knowing the people in Hartlepool I think they'll get behind John as soon as they hear him speak because he talks their language. He talks the fighting talk and that's what we're a town of, a town of battlers.

"It's the way he comes across, he just seems so right for this club now. There are occasions when you always question your decisions, but we didn't with this one, it just feels right.

"He's come into the club the morning after his appointment and everybody to a man has said what a great guy he is and that they feel more motivated already, and that's just the staff. So if he has the same effect on the team, here we go."
