The Cherries took advantage of Rovers' goalless draw at home to MK Dons by defeating Crewe 2-1 at the Alexandra Stadium.

Brett Pitman scored a 59th-minute penalty and then sealed the win six minutes from time following Mathias Pogba's equaliser.

Sheffield United remained firmly in the promotion hunt too, with a 2-0 win at relegation strugglers Bury. Jonathan Forte and Jamie Murphy found the net for the Blades.

Sixth-placed Brentford were 2-0 winners over Stevenage, Tom Adeyemi and Marcello Trotta scoring in either half, to hold off seventh-placed Yeovil.

The Glovers also won, 3-1 at home to Preston.

Chris Beardsley gave the Lilywhites a 30th-minute lead but a late surge including strikes from James Hayter (73), Nathan Ralph (80) and Paddy Madden (90) saw Yeovil to victory.

Scunthorpe defeated Carlisle 3-1 at Glanford Park to move five points clear of the drop zone.

Akpo Sodje started and finished the scoring, with Paul Reid also on target for the Iron and James Berrett grabbing the Cumbrians' consolation on the stroke of half-time.

The division's bottom two shared a goalless draw, with Portsmouth contesting a stalemate at Hartlepool.
