The odds would appear to be stacked against the Shakers at present as they lie eight points from safety and under a transfer embargo after obtaining a loan to pay wages from the Professional Footballers' Association.

But the next week could shape their destiny, with Saturday's trip to basement boys Portsmouth followed by back-to-back home games against fellow strugglers Scunthorpe and Colchester.

"They're all massive games, we knew this month was the big one," Blackwell said.

"We had to get into a position where we could at least have a chance to get out of it. That's what we've done and I don't want us to mess that up.

"This month was the chance for us to get out and all the way through it's been about trying to get to a point of getting out."

In a squad patched together by youthful loan arrivals and players on non-contract terms, Blackwell has called on his experienced heads to stand up and be counted over the coming week.

"You've got to try and play it down to a degree, but you can't hide from the fact they are massive games," he added.

"Players at the top, they rise to the occasion, some people wilt and I think that's the difference in the level of players you've got. Hopefully the players will rise to the occasion.

"The senior players who've been there, seen it, done it and bought the T-shirt have got to bring the youngsters through - we're a very young team barring one or two players."
