Karl Hawley tapped in the only goal of the game four minutes before the break to keep alive the Iron's hopes of avoiding the drop as the Dons' play-off hopes were dashed.

United are now three points behind 20th-placed Colchester and Laws said: "It's got to be classed as an important win for us and it takes us to the last game of the season with some hope.

"It's goal difference that will be a key and we'll probably have to score a couple more goals and hope that Colchester lose their game.

"But at least we have got a bite at the cherry in the last game of the season.

"It was an important reaction from the players after the second-half performance against Bury, they've won a bit of pride back.

"We're still in with a shout, we've still got a little bit of fight left in us and hopefully we can get a huge crowd behind us on Saturday against Swindon.

"You just never know what might happen, so let's get everybody together and have a right go at it.

"I hammered them after Tuesday, but this was the response that we needed.

"Everybody was down, it was like a morgue for a few days, but great credit to the players for coming here and winning."
