The 40-year-old was named as Brian Flynn's successor on a one-year rolling contract on Monday after coming through a gruelling three-week selection process.

The former Oldham boss, who resigned at Boundary Park in February, attracted interest from other clubs and was reported to have been on Sheffield United's shortlist.

But after getting his man, Ryan admires Dickov's tenacity and tips him to succeed at the Keepmoat.

"I am absolutely ecstatic because it has been a long process," he said.

"We know there have been several other clubs interested in Paul Dickov. But we got our man, it's great and we can really move forward.

"He is young, enthusiastic and has all the qualities we feel we need to take us on in the Championship. I like the way he plays football, but the bottom line is he's a winner.

"The fans will come to love him just as I have. He has achieved a lot in the game. He was told he was too small to play football but he played in the Premier League for Arsenal and Manchester City.

"I like a guy that overcomes obstacles and he did that at Oldham, he managed to keep them running along."

ah, Fergie is just having another pop at Rooney. He just wants to put him down whenever he gets a chance. Rooney is by far the best English player. Carrick is not far behind, mind. However, by elevating Carrick like that, Sir is having a dig at Wayne. Fergie is well-known for mind games like that. Good to see he's still feisty.
