The 21-year-old is a graduate of Southampton's academy and played non-league football with Basingstoke, Lewes and Forest Green Rovers.

Rovers manager Ronnie Moore told the club's official website: "James has done really well in pre-season, both in training and the matches and I think he will get better and better with experience.

"He's got a lot of energy, is calm on the ball and has good passing ability.

"He'll add to the competition for places in midfield and I'm pleased he has agreed to join us."
