The former Cardiff forward, who also had spells with Coventry, Wigan and Tranmere, scored 90 times in nearly 250 appearances during his playing career and will be working on a voluntary basis to coach the Shrews' forwards.

"I believe (being a striker) is specialist position and it is an area that I believe if we do a bit extra work and work a bit harder to get that quality we can score a few more goals," boss Micky Mellon told the club's official website.

"Hopefully it will pay dividends."
