The 18-year-old was used in defence and midfield after moving up from the under-18s and his new six-month deal gives him the opportunity to continue his progression this term.

McKnight is eyeing a first-team place as the Reds aim for an immediate return to the Championship.

"I am really pleased to sign for Barnsley and I am looking forward to the challenge of trying to get in the team," the Northern Ireland youth international told the club's official website.

"I am a central midfielder but I am capable of playing at right-back."
