Turner: Guided team to promotion

Turner enjoyed his first promotion as a young player-manager with Shrewsbury in 1979 when he led them up into the old second division and he was thrilled to achieve the same feeling three decades later.

A James Collins header in the 38th minute signalled the start of a huge celebration from a record Greenhous Meadow crowd as Shrewsbury booked a place in the third tier of English football for the first time in 15 years.

Turner said: "If you look back to 1979, we weren't expected to be going into the Championship, a small club like Shrewsbury. But this year the infrastructure is in place. It's a good club, it's solid, sound financially.

"It deserves to be playing at a higher level so there's a difference between '79, when there wasn't so many expectations, to this season when people were expecting us to do what we've done."

Turner is already looking to the future as he seeks to make Shrewsbury competitive at a higher level, adding: "We've got to start planning next week and the week after. There is obviously a significant difference."
