Alexander: Set to trim squad

Upon replacing Micky Mellon at the Highbury Stadium last month, Alexander stated the Cod Army's first-team group was over-sized.

Since then, David Lucas, Gareth Evans, Mozesh Gyorio and Jamille Matt have come through the door with no permanent departures heading the other way.

"We're not desperately trying to offload any individuals but we are top-heavy," Alexander said.

"In a competitive squad everybody has got to have a realistic chance of playing but if you've got over 30 pros then, ultimately, it's the case that every week you're going to have a lot of people who are not even on the bench.

"I don't think it's healthy for the group, I don't think it's healthy for the players.

"You've got to have that carrot at the end of the week that you might get a game and if that's not there for you then you can go downhill pretty sharpish, your whole mentality can diminish.

"So we need to do that and let people carry on their careers elsewhere but it's not specific individuals, just to lighten the load really."
