His settled Pirates side have moved from rock-bottom of the Football League on Boxing Day to a comfortable mid-table position and Ward, who signed a one-year rolling contract on Friday, is keen to keep his group together.

"Sometimes it is inevitable that a football club has to make wholesale changes to a squad of players in the summers between football seasons for one reason or another, but I'd like to keep the majority of this group together," he told the Bristol Evening Post.

In the summer of 2011 previous manager Paul Buckle signed 19 players in a revamped Rovers squad, but his new-look side failed to live up to expectations and Buckle was sacked in January 2012.

Ward added: "In an ideal world we'd be looking to get everything signed and sealed as quickly as we can because I'd prefer to be looking at a handful of new faces over the summer rather than a big influx."

Michael Smith and Matt Harrold both penned long-term deals this week, while Rovers hope to make goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall and defender Mark McChrystal's short-term deals permanent.
