The 19-year-old midfielder was released by the Clarets at the end of last season having made just one senior appearance but despite that manager James Beattie is confident in McCartan's potential impact at the club.

"We'd had good reports about him from coaches and team mates who played with him at Burnley," the Stanley boss said.

"He's a young player with massive potential and I think he's got that little bit of something about him - a bit of fire in his eyes."

The Northern Ireland Under-21 international also spent time on loan at non-league Hyde last term and he will go straight into Beattie's squad for the forthcoming pre-season friendlies.
