However, the Rovers boss was angry with the fans who invaded the Ashton Gate pitch at the final whistle.

Police horses had to be brought on to clear the playing area after celebrating City fans ran on to goad the Rovers supporters behind one of the goals while missiles were hurled in both directions.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas rocketed the Robins into a deserved lead with a fantastic left-footed strike from 25 yards in the 12th minute and the hosts could have been more than a goal up at the break.

Rovers were far more competitive in the second half and equalised when Mark McCrystal headed home a 59th-minute free-kick from Lee Brown.

But 19-year-old midfielder Joe Bryan curled home an exquisite winner for City with his right foot, the Bristolian's first goal in senior football.

"I'm almost relieved we didn't equalise at the end because I don't know what would have happened," he said.

"I am an adopted Bristolian with great pride in the city. The football pitch is for fit young footballers and when fat people get on it and cause trouble we all suffer.

"As far as the football is concerned, I am only disappointed in the result. There are ways to lose and that was the right way because we took on a team who were in the Championship until recently and caused them a lot of problems.

"The second half in particular was really good from our point of view. The game could have gone either way and we have been beaten by two brilliant finishes."
