A Leeds' fan was jailed for attacking Sheffield Wednesday keeper Chris Kirkland at Hillsborough eight days ago, while Owls boss Dave Jones was subjected to sick chants.

Leeds chairman Ken Bates and his board subsequently asked fans to turn their backs on the pitch if there was any obscene chanting against Charlton, with the appeal being carried into Saturday's game against Birmingham and all future United games.

Backing the initiative, Warnock told the Daily Mirror: "I don't like listening to those kinds of chants. It is a part of the game I don't enjoy and is something we could all well do without. It turns my stomach at times.

"I totally back the initiative, but how we shall ever get rid of the vile chanting I don't know.

"It has got to come from within and from our own fans, like the campaign says.

"But it will be difficult because you have only got to look at the hatred in some supporters and not just ours - all around the country, all clubs have got them - and it is frightening at times.

"I can only see self-policing working, but, even then, it is very difficult how you will ever achieve that.

"It's very awkward to tell a 6ft 2in bloke, who is intoxicated, that you are going to get him arrested. It is easier said than done, and I don't think it is possible safety-wise."

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.
