McDermott's men face tough back-to-back away trips to Blackpool then Nottingham Forest this week but the former Reading boss is undaunted by the prospect of trying to pick up more points on the road.

Leeds' recent improvement meant they could celebrate Christmas Day in fifth place and McDermott told his club's official website: "I'm pleased with the spirit and I'm pleased with the camaraderie.

"I'm pleased with the fact that the club is getting 31,000 people through the turnstiles so we are going in the right direction.

"I think that we are going to see that improvement as the season goes on. We are certainly resilient and we have got a good record at home. We won the last away game 3-0 and we want to go into these next two away games and get points on the board."

Blackpool have slid out of promotion contention on the back of four straight defeats but midfielder Steve Davies says his side have not lost confidence that they will be able to turn their season back around.

Ahead of the live Sky Sports clash against Leeds on Boxing Day, Davies said: "Christmas is an important time with three games, and if we win them all then we're right back up there.

"We'll be looking to take all nine points from this period and see where we end up. If we keep working hard we know it will turn. We started the season well, so we have nothing to worry about. We just have to get out of this little sticky patch."
