Cairney - told he could leave Leeds as a 16-year-old for being too small - was the standout player at Elland Road as he made his old club wish they had kept him.

He laid on first-half goals for Jordan Rhodes and Rudy Gestede with a masterful display of passing and crossing, but must now head back east to parent club Hull to learn what his future holds.

But with Tom Huddlestone showing England form in Hull colours there does not appear to be an immediate future for him at the KC Stadium, and Tigers boss Steve Bruce indicated after his side's game at Liverpool that he expects a deal to be done soon.

"Steve Bruce must be sick of my number coming up on his phone," Bowyer said.

"Tom is a Hull player and we must be respectful of that but Steve has been great to allow Tom to come here with us. We have to see where it goes from there.

"He's a talented footballer that's for sure. The deal is work in progress and we will speak to Hull in the next couple of days."

With Cairney looking likely to become a permanent fixture at Ewood Park, Rovers fans will now be hoping the departures door stays bolted as far as Rhodes is concerned.

The Scotland international's goal was his 16th of another prolific season and Premier League clubs are almost certain to call, but Bowyer is sure any offers will be resisted.

"He increases his value with every goal but the owners don't want to sell him, it's as simple as that," he said.

"You can never say never at any price, look at Ronaldo or Gareth Bale with a monster, monster bid. But we are in no rush.

"I would expect a lot of interest but I would expect interest in a lot of players. Jordan has a good relationship with everyone at the club and wants to get to the Premier League with Blackburn."

For Leeds it was a case of packing up the Christmas and New Year period and reflecting on a horror show.

United were starting to shape up as genuine promotion contenders prior to the start of the glut of fixtures but two points from 12 have left them out of form and now looking towards the transfer window.

Manager Brian McDermott has been trying to secure some new faces but as is often the case at the West Yorkshire club, boardroom uncertainty means it is not known if the funds are in place.

"We have to improve the squad; I have to," McDermott said. "We have to try and bring in two, three, four players who can come in and play. That is really important.

"We need players who know the level and have played in this league before. We know that and we have to try and find them. But if we reflect we are eighth in the league so let's try and do something. January can be important for us."

McDermott is trying to make the best of his current lot but accepts they have little more to give him.

"We are looking a bit leg weary but we are squeezing all we can out of the players and they are doing all they can," he added.

"We need to bring players in but everyone is in the same boat. I have already spoken to someone and it would be good if we could do something. I have had a good conversation with (managing director) David Haigh and they are doing their best. I will get support."

think that puts all doubts over Benteke's quality to bed. Can he do it after receiving the ball to feet, in the box, totally unmarked, on a warm, sunny afternoon in Swindon? Oh yes he can! This year is definitely Liverpool's year. YNWA.

ll very well selling all midfield and strikers but unless we bring anyone in that is better than what we had then it will be a terrible transfer window in my view. Sorted out the defense but our midfield and striker options look very light.

ove it when Jose accuses others of being defensive, cynical and playing to win. If I was Wenger, I'd get that quote laminated and framed - surely the biggest compliment he's ever received from Mourinho. You've got him riled Arsene - you're relevant again!
