Skrtel targets top-four finish

Martin Skrtel is convinced that Liverpool can finish in the top four and hopes he still has many more years at Anfield ahead of him.

Martin Skrtel: Looking to help Liverpool back into Europe's premier club com

The Slovakia international has been on Merseyside since January 2008 and has graced the Champions League on two occasions, but the last four seasons have seen the Reds come up short in that particular race.

That could all change in 2013/14, with Brendan Rodgers' side having enjoyed a productive opening which has them sat second in the Premier League standings.

Skrtel sees no reason why they cannot cling to a lofty perch and return to European football's top table - with a title challenge still very much on the cards.

He said in the Liverpool Echo: "A good start was something we targeted and prepared for.

"But the season is very long and we just go from game to game trying to get as many points as possible.

"All of us believe that this season we can stay towards the top positions and get back into Europe. To play in the Champions League is the dream for every player.

"We are working hard every single day to achieve that. I hope at the end of the season we will be happy."

Skrtel intends to play a leading role in Liverpool's quest, despite fierce competition for places, and continues to pay little attention to the rumours which suggest he could soon be on his way to pastures new.

He added: "I have been here at Liverpool for six years and it's been a great six years for me.

"Playing for such an illustrious club like Liverpool for six years is something any footballer would be proud of.

"I will be 29 in December, I have a contract here for three more years and I am very happy. I will keep striving to do my best and see what that time brings.

"Now I am just trying hard to keep myself in the team, and that's not easy with six centre-backs competing for two or three places."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
