The Belgian international enjoyed a good start to his Anfield career following his summer move from Sunderland.

A couple of errors have dogged him in recent weeks - but Rodgers is in no way worried about his number one.

"The fact is that Simon has been a wonderful capture for us," Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo.

"Okay, people will maybe look at a few of mistakes Simon has made but I just think it's normal for a keeper to make mistakes.

"I remember listening to Bob Wilson once who said expect a top keeper to make maybe 70 mistakes a season. If you think Simon is on three then he's done all right.

"His attitude has been excellent and the saves he has made for us have been exceptional.

"There will be one or two areas he will maybe be disappointed with, but I will always take an honest mistake from someone who is working tirelessly to be the best they can be."

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.

he uber commercialisation of the 90s has led to the point where this overly familar, try hard, jolly hockey sticks type fronts up a major football match on a weekly basis. Unlike the great presenters of yesteryear, I doubt he would even recognise the scent of Brut.
