Vieira: City made Pogba error

Patrick Vieira believes not making a move for Paul Pogba when he left Manchester United was a transfer 'mistake' by Manchester City.

Paul Pogba: Is being linked with a return to England

The French midfielder opted to leave Old Trafford in the summer of 2012, with the expiration of his contract allowing him to link up with Serie A giants Juventus.

Now 20 years of age, Pogba has taken his game to new levels in Italy - earning him widespread acclaim and senior international recognition.

A return to England is now being mooted, with City among those reported to be keen, but Vieira feels the Blues should already have the highly-rated youngster on the books.

Vieira, who is Elite Development Squad manager at the Etihad Stadium, told L'Equipe: "He's a player I really like.

"I saw him play for Manchester United and to not have signed him when he left that club was a mistake because he is an extraordinary player.

"Many tell me that (he plays like I used to). I think he is more attacking than me and perhaps more technically skilled."

Meanwhile, Vieira has revealed that he snubbed offers from afar to stick with City after announcing his retirement and work towards achieving his goal of becoming a successful coach.

He added: "When I ended my career, I didn't know which way to go.

"I spoke with Manchester City officials and they wanted me to stay. I was happy at the club.

"They proposed for me to spend two years working in each department. It was an amazing opportunity. It made my decision to stop playing easier.

"I had a few offers from France and the USA, but I was not attracted to them.

"Now I understand better how a club works. I liked the time I spent in the academy, passing knowledge on to young players. It came naturally to me. That has also given me the desire to work towards my coaching qualifications in Wales."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
