Pellegrini: No mind games

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has refused to be drawn into a war of words with Jose Mourinho over a number of recent comments from the Chelsea manager.

Manuel Pellegrini: No mind games with Jose Mourinho

Last week Mourinho claimed his 'little horse of a side' had no chance of winning the Premier League title, despite their 1-0 victory over City at the Etihad.

He then questioned how Financial Fair Play would impact on City, queried Pellegrini's grasp of basic maths over recent transfers before saying the FA were wrong not to take action over Yaya Toure following an off-the-ball incident with Norwich striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel last weekend.

But speaking ahead Wednesday's home game against Sunderland, Pellegrini allowed himself to answer just one question based on Mourinho's rants before turning his attentions to the race for the Premier League title.

"I answered just once to Mourinho because if you remain in silence always, people may agree with those things," said Pellegrini.

"He started talking about referees and Financial Fair Play, I don't think it is the way to go about things. I will not continue every week talking about things that for me are not important.

"These are not mind games because I don't think managers can be affected by those kind of things, but I will not answer any more on Mourinho."

Pellegrini, who insists dropping five points against Chelsea and Norwich in the past 10 days is 'normal for teams at this time of the season', is adamant five teams still have a chance of lifting the title come May.

"It is normal that all teams will drop points but don't forget from the last 10 games we have taken 25 points from a possible 30," he said.

"Maybe we lost the game against Chelsea and have drawn against Norwich but all the teams in the bottom half of the table will take points off other teams in the second half of the season and for me this situation is normal.

"The same teams who were favourites three weeks ago, remain the favourites. It is a very close Premier League and I think Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham will all be in a fight until the end."

And so ... everyone's talking about not talking about Jose talking. No one is pointing out that Chelsea have an extra day off before Saturday's Cup game, better recent form (inc. win at Etihad) and far fewer injury problems. Pressure = Off. Well played once again Jose. On a side note, I do enjoy all the Chelsea haters taking time out to write in about how they are so bored of Jose they don't care about what he says. Or at least only care just enough to write in. Keep it coming!

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

H

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
