Alvaro Negredo: Hoping for Spanish role

Alvaro Negredo: Hoping for Spanish role

Nine goals in 18 Premier League starts have seen Negredo emerge as one of the most feared front-men in England.

The former Sevilla star is hoping his form for City will push him to the front of the queue for Spain.

"It would be fantastic to be the centre forward for Spain in the World Cup," he told the Manchester Evening News.

"But there is tremendous competition. You can only do your thing, play well, score goals and hope that the coach has an eye on you.

"I have adapted very well to England, both on and off the pitch. Yes, the weather is not like Sevilla, it rains a lot. This winter has been awful, but life is quiet and the people are very respectful."

He feels his claims for a Spanish place are helped by the fact he feels the Premier League is stronger than La Liga.

"At this point in time the Premier League is stronger than La Liga," he said.

"The football here is much better organised, and the finances much sounder.

"It is harder to beat West Brom or Sunderland than a Spanish side from mid table. The gap between Barcelona, Real, Atletico and the others has become too big.

"Here all the teams are dangerous - especially at home. The pace and the energy are incredible. They have big centre forwards that can hurt you.

"The stadiums are full and the crowds are very passionate."

Next week will see Negredo and City come up against Barcelona and he is hopeful that they can get the better of the Catalan giants.

He added: "We like to have the ball, we have a good repertoire - we've got fast men down the wing, people in midfield who can give the right touch and the wingers like to come infield too. We've got resources, haven't we?

"I think one of the things that is going to be important in this game is who has got the ball.

"It's clear that it is very difficult to take the ball off Barcelona, but when they don't have the ball, they suffer.

"Another thing is that we are not usually a team that gives the ball away easily. That could discourage them too."

Despite having Lionel Messi, who Negredo concedes is the best player in the world, he does not fear Barca.

"Without doubt, Messi is Messi, the best player in the world, and they've got

him," he said.

"In this case he has been injured but neither have you seen the worst Barcelona in the world.

"Maybe it's a Barcelona that is not working so much now at a high level, or that doesn't perform the attacking part quite as well without Leo.

"But Leo is Leo. If Leo's not there, there will be another player. It's bad news if he's not there."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

H

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
