The 24-year-old struggled to adapt last season after a big money move from Fiorentina, managing just three league goals in 11 appearances during an injury-riddled first year.

The Montenegro international looks a different player this season following an impressive pre-season and has been selected to partner Edin Dzeko in City’s first two Premier League while Sergio Aguero works his way back to full fitness following his World Cup exploits.

Jovetic took advantage of the opportunity by netting the first two goals in City’s 3-1 win over their title rivals but he is refusing to get complacent and remains eager to build upon that display when Stoke City visit the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

"I was happy with pre-season and against Newcastle I played well but didn't score,” Jovetic said.

"Now I have scored two but I am going to forget this because in five days we have another game against Stoke and it won't be easy.

"This was a victory for the group, the team, and three points is the most important.

"It was a great game against a big team like Liverpool. I think we played very well and at the end this was a game of six points.

"I think Liverpool are going to be back for the title. It is important when you play against them to beat them."

Jovetic’s improved form has not gone unnoticed amongst his City teammates and Pablo Zabaleta believes this is just the start of a big season for the striker.

"I can see him playing really well even in training,” Zabaleta said. “He is doing great during the week. He is very hungry to play games this season and score goals.

"We know we have four strikers in the team. We have a very strong squad.

"I think this is great for the team because we are going to play a lot of games this season and I think the manager will rotate players during the games.

"I think we need all of them in a good moment. For the strikers it is always important to score goals because it will help them to have more confidence."

Manuel Pellegrini has eased Aguero back into action following his involvement in Argentina’s run to the World Cup final.

The 26-year-old has played just eight and 23 minutes respectively in City’s opening two fixtures against Newcastle and Liverpool, though he has scored in both games.

Pellegrini revealed after the Liverpool match he will continue to ease the forward back into action with Aguero likely to start on the bench again on Saturday.

The Argentine missed 15 Premier League last season as he struggled with various injuries and he admitted he is very happy to play limited minutes as he works himself back to full fitness.

"I am feeling better,” Aguero admitted. “I'm training good and feeling good. I wish to continue like this as I haven't done a proper pre-season for ages."
