@Keighley....This is Alex Ferguson we are talking about, not some mundane wet behind the ears media suck up, but Sir Alex Ferguson. He doesn't pander to these clowns, he has a back bone and to be honest I think it WAS the professional thing to do to say 'you know what, I'm not in the right state of mind to perfom this interview, I'll send someone else'....it makes no difference. Is anybody wondering what Fergie would have said?? No. UEFA officials seem to be ok to pick and choose when they apply the rules, so why not Fergie? Football is theatre, and Sir Alex is one of our greatest performers, and for me he's earned the right to do what he wants, football will be a far duller place without him!

fishcake, it was a harsh decision and I can understand the frustration but if every team on the wrong end of a poor decision acted so petulantly there would be a lot of missed interviews. And the only reason it was better for Mike Phelan to talk to press was Alex could not be trusted to be professional enough. I agree the teams are the attraction, but until the top teams break away they need to abide by UEFA rules, and you can not pick and choose based on a referring decision you do not agree with.

@Keighleykeith....Mike Phelan spoke to the press, it was for the best that Fergie didn't. Perhaps UEFA should make sure they have decent ref's making common sense decisions next time. And I thought it was the FOOTBALL teams that people paid to watch, not UEFA? You want to see how much they make for doing f**k all!

The champions league pays a lot of money to the teams in it. So much so that finishing top 4 in EPL is really important to a team's finances and prospects. Part of being paid that money is the teams enter into a contract, like any other contract, and part of the deal is that the teams do certain things to promote the competition and provide a good worldwide viewing experience to ensure those monies being paid out are sky high. Not doing them is a breach of contract. So all this about right to remain silent (I thought that was applied to people accused of crimes) and UEFA can do one is nonsense, unless you also agree to forgo all the money earned from the champions league this year, although this is probably required to try to buy back Ronaldo. Any United fans agree to loss all the CL money? If not then abide by the contract and do the media interviews required by it and stop moaning when UEFA take reasonable actions to get CL participants to keep to the agreements they have made.

Just it gets a bit tiresome reading comments from people like you that simply talk utter drivel as if its a fact, there is NO evidence, no comment from a ref, nothing to say that refs are scared of Fergie, a 71 year old!....but here you are insinuating they are! The actual evidence says that fans play a far bigger role, but your probably too ignorant to know that. If people think the Nani card was valid, fine.....its just that those same people didn't think a two footed lunge was dangerous, or stamping on someone's chest was dangerous, or the Real keeper punching Vidic in the head was dangerous...but now apparently they think attempting to control the ball and someone running into his foot is. It just comes across as a lot of guff from some very bitter, very sad fans who will embarrass themselves in order to make points that have no truth to them at all. Liverpool cant even qualify for the EC, yet their fans are pouring out to take the p**s.....is that really how far you have fallen? I dont think United fans even noticed your humilating exit from the Europa League!

Hey Richie is back with is funny comments. Where have you been, we have all missed you, it's not half as funny on here! Anyway, my first question to funny comment is based around your, 'if the Madrid player tried to head the ball!' If he was trying to head it from that position not only would he not be playing for Madrid, he wouldn't even get in Sunday League team but I guess it re inforces your level of football knowledge. So if we are worried about players being in danger with their head, what about keepers when they punch the ball clear, should they be sent off? Your insight please!

common people we could all throw a hissy over the red card , point out the similar tackle before hand that only got a yellow and all other kinds of things but it wont change the result sadly and to be fair to them they still fought on till the end and it sadly dint get use the result we wanted . I can only imagine the crushing disappointment after going ahead then the red card, the going behind , fighting back with everything they had and still lossing, i imagine they sat in the changing room in complete silence after the match, so what if they dint give a interview after the match , i watch football to watch the game not to hear rooney or any other player complaining away about how they where robbed . and on another note by all means beat down on united in a moment of weakness, im sure there is not going to be a single moment in the rest of the season where your own teams have a low point , that other fans are going to give you grief about

fishcake - a bit touchy, aren't you? Anyone else dare comment on this story and you go into one, looking up who everyone supports and telling them how your club is superior to theirs. Which, presumably, in your eyes, makes their comments about a red card invalid. Well, I'm sure a lot of Real Madrid supporters think the card was justified, and your club is behind theirs in pretty much every way. Your attitude is exactly the same displayed by your club's illustrious manager, no one should dare challenge the club, at any time, over anything. It might work over here but, in Europe, Manchester United are not anyone to be bullied by. There are bigger clubs with better records.

It would be interesting to see how much UEFA fine United, it'll be probably be less than what they would have fined Fergie if he'd actually spoke his mind after the game, seeing as how their world view is completely arse about tit. I still can't believe Bendtner got fined more for wearing lucky pants than what people get fined for being racist.
