Caulker replaces Rio for England

Rio Ferdinand has pulled out of the England squad for the World Cup qualifiers with San Marino and Montenegro as he manages his fitness.

From what I can gather Hodgson announced Ferdinand's call up before he actually spoke to the player so what was Rio supposed to do? Rather than alienate the England Manager by announcing publicly that he isn't able to play he waited until he could speak face to face with Hodgson to explain his reasons. Where Rio's concerned that sounds remarkably sensible for to me.

to be honest from a spurs point of view, and im probably alone... caulker is good enough to play for the national side against san marino, but quite frankly he is not all that, maybe another year he'll be of premiership defender quality, but at the moment he's just 'club in championship thats too big to be championship but then you know they'll be relegated straight away from the premiership as soon as they are up' quality, he wouldnt play as much for us if kaboul was fit..or gallas wasnt ancient

@triangle.....a Liverpool fan, talking about 'fair play'.....anyone else see the problem with that? We know why you're on here mate, don't embarrass yourself by trying to pretend you have morals.

Surely there are a few fairly obvious things going on here. First, Rio on Torres was a shocker, but a total lack of perspective (mainly from Liverpool fans suggesting it was equivalent to mass murder) tends to make United fans a bit more argumentative than they would otherwise be. Second, Rio is a bit of a twonk, and is widely disliked by fans of United's rivals (it's the ones that are easy to dislike that get the hate, for obvious reasons: Cole, Terry or Suarez, anyone?). Third, his 'specialised fitness regime' is obviously not new, and Fergie obviously knew about it when he said 'Rio will be joining the England squad', but it wasn't until Rio sat down with Hodgson and they discussed it that it became clear to both parties that they couldn't accommodate his regime (which he's very much reliant on) whilst away on England duty. I'm not saying he's not an limelight-hogger and I'm not saying he's not a Twitter-wh*re, but get some perspective.

fishcake....do ever comment without mentioning Liverpool?.......or does it just seem like that?.....paranoid or jealous?

yellabelly (Liverpool) says...

obviously this 'specialised fitness regime' has not materialised overnight, so he would have known beforehand that he wouldn't have been available and should have stated so, but no he has to hog the limelight and play the drama queen. i think that is what people are not happy with, not about whether he deserves to be in the squad or not

@fishcake That sort of attitude is why ManU fans have a bad name for having an over-inflated sense of entitlement. There's no possibility that people are critical of Rio's cowardly little move on Torres because Rio actually did something wrong, no? Like you said yourself, Torres doesn't play for Liverpool anymore so the only reason Liverpool fans might care would be (and bear with me here because it might be a stretch for you) a sense of fair play. Don't you think that that might be the reason? Just maybe?

So, semi-perma crock man dropped for being unable to play regular matches, gets a recall but pulls out because he's semi-perma crocked and can't play? Mmmm, curious.

@fresh, UTD fans blinkered!?! Rio has been our most consistent defender this season and the league table backs that up! Unlike you lot who come out on a daily basis claiming to have the best everything in the league! For example only over the last week we're after hearing from either your captain or manager, claiming "we've the best player in the league" or "On current form we are the best team in the league" only last month month your Chairman was boasting ye have the "most balanced squad in the league" Now the only thing you lot are actually short is The League Title! Because you have the "best" of everything else!! A you call UTD fans blinkered...
