Owen calls time on career

Former England striker Michael Owen has announced he will retire at the end of the season, saying "the time's right to bring the curtain down".

I think all these disputes quite appropriately show how Owen will be remembered. Trying to keep my personal opinions about him aside, he'll always be remembered as a world class player in his early days, but for whatever reason (decisions, injuries, lack of ambition etc) didn't become anywhere near the player he could have been. I'll never remember him in the way I'd remember Fowler, or Carragher. To put it simply, it's a shame that he never did anything in his prime.

If Owen's career was reversed i.e. the first six years were all injuries and the last ten were the success years (inc "balloon door") then we would be talking about him as one of the great English players. It's a shame that most people seem to remember him as a bench warmer rather than one of englands great all time goalscorers.

Interesting fact...Owen is one of only a handful of scousers with a Premier League winners medal, which places him in the company of Mike Newell, Francis Jeffers and Wayne Rooney.

i for one won't miss him.. he took early retirement when he went to trafford at the age of 29. why you ask, he was supposedly in his prime and was told he would be a bit part player but still went. trouble is as someone mentioned earlier, he will be on motd all the timethe smug little chit.......

@bemused....leaving a mid table club? the five seasons after Owen left Liverpool came 5th, 3rd, 3rd, 4th then 2nd.....whilst after a year playing for Madrid, Owen did sit in the mid table for a while with Newcastle.

He was a great player, but his career was over by the time he was in his mid twenties. From the day he left Liverpool, he barely looked a shadow the player he had once been. Its a real shame - the footballers career is short enough, and to be so good at the start but so mediocre by the end - i cant help but feel he shoudl have dropped down a level, but then again, i wasnt getting the wages, so i guess it made sense to him. Interesting that it happened the same day as Jeffers getting two for Accrington Stanley though........

shockmaster you think Fowler had a personality? Maybe but it was flawed. I remember fowler taunting Le Saux for being a homo sexual on the pitch this despite him being married. Perhaps this might be acceptable where you are from but I think it offensive and I am sure if it was the other way round there would have been an out cry. As to Owen I can remember he did a programme on Football skills, bit premature that one for me. I have nothing against him and thought he was a good England player but injuries took it's toll I suppose. Everbody seems to think that it would be nice for former players to be Refs but I would like to see former players join clubs further down the leagues or even non-league, give something back as it were.

m curious as to what image Real Madrid are trying to re-establish as I always thought their pre-Jose image was one of a bunch of a classless bullies tapping up whoever they wanted while living it large on borrowed money they're never going to pay back.
