Van Gaal is currently preparing the Netherlands for Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final against Costa Rica, but his attention will swiftly switch to England after the tournament.

Rebuilding work is needed at Old Trafford following a disappointing season which saw the team slip to seventh place in the Premier League.

Gullit is fully aware of the pressure his countryman will face following spells in charge of Chelsea and Newcastle, but feels his experience and no-nonsense approach can change United’s fortunes.

“He’s proved it at Barcelona, he’s also proved it at Bayern Munich, so give him a chance,” he told Sky Sports News.

“It will be tough especially with the press. I can’t wait for the press conferences with him. He’s a character, he’s a very good coach, knows how to prepare a team, knows how to do it and hopefully will do well with Manchester United. We’re all going to follow him.

“He does everything himself, he wants to, but you have to accept the way he is. He is sometimes very confrontational, but if you win things why not take it?”

A former Holland star, Gullit has watched England struggle on the big stage again, suffering an early exit in Brazil.

He believes the youth system in England needs radical changes and has pointed to the influx of foreign players as another reason for the national team’s failings.

“What is your identity? You’ve thrown it out in the bin a long time ago,” he said.

“That’s why you have to find your identity. Start with the youth system, start with the kids. Don’t play competitive football.

“Your biggest problem is on the most important part of the pitch, the players are only foreigners.

"Goalkeepers in the top five are a foreigner, back in the centre, all foreigners, the playing midfielder a foreigner. Then you have the No 10, who plays behind the striker, is a foreigner and the striker.

“In your spine you have only foreigners."

t's a bloody good goal, though. Sh!t, the kid's gonna be the worlds best before we know it, isn't he? He's got the touch of genius in him. Like Neymar, but with muscles and stuff. He's doing a Ronaldo as we watch. He's bulked up to be able to ride the tackles, but he's improved technically as well. His touch is sublime. Bugger.
