With nothing but pride at stake for both sides, Chester had the better of the the opening exchanges and could have gone ahead after nine minute had Richie Partridge not been wasteful from 10 yards.

John Rooney then rattled the crossbar after 16 minutes with a well-struck 12-yard drive as the Silkmen threatened to break the deadlock.

The home side dominated proceeding in the second period and went close on several occasions through Paul Rutherford.

Partridge was unfortunate not to open the scoring after 65 minutes when he cut in from the right flank and unleashed a delightful chip which goalkeeper Jonny Brain somehow scrambled over.
