Alan Sheehan was adjudged to have fouled Benni McCarthy and Gallagher, who enjoyed a successful loan spell at Plymouth last season, made no mistake.

Leeds should have been ahead in the first half but Fabian Delph's shot hit a post in the eighth minute from 20 yards before Jermaine Beckford flicked a Robert Snodgrass corner onto the crossbar.

However, Beckford did put Leeds ahead five minutes into the second half, pouncing from close range after Luciano Becchio had nodded on another Snodgrass corner.
