The former Robins marksman received a warm welcome from the home support but could not remind them of what they would be missing for the forthcoming campaign, instead seeing a great chance bounce just the wrong side of a post in the 78th minute.

It was Swindon centre-back Gordon Greer who grabbed the only goal of the game, heading home Anthony McNamee's 33rd-minute corner to inflict Albion's first pre-season defeat in six games.

Baggies head coach Roberto Di Matteo, who made seven changes for the encounter, told the club's official website: "The positives from the Swindon game are that when we did have possession there was good quality on the ball.

"Also, a few players played 90 minutes.

"But I rotated the team a little bit because we've played three games in six days and have another one on Saturday at home to Chievo."
