The former Cardiff defender, a free summer signing, is ready to play despite only recently overcoming a fractured elbow, while fellow new recruit Tommy Miller will also be hoping to make his bow in midfield.

Akpo Sodje's injury curse continues as he is sidelined with a slight groin problem - he missed most of the last campaign with knee tendon trouble - so either Francis Jeffers or Leon Clarke will partner Marcus Tudgay up front in the South Yorkshire derby clash.

Richard Wood is expected to slot in alongside Purse in central defence, but Mark Beevers and Richard Hinds are also in the frame, while Lewis Buxton should get the nod for the right-back position ahead of Frank Simek, who is fully recovered from his long-term ankle injury.
